There are two kinds of people in this world: people who like pizza, and people who like grilling. Well, recently two representatives of these groups mated on the back porch of my house and produced a superhuman offspring who likes GRILLED PIZZA! Here’s the super simple recipe for grilled pizza this superhuman offspring imparted to me and that I made just last night, much to my taste buds’ satisfaction.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
1) A ready-to-go pizza dough ball. I used an Il Fornaio pizza dough ball which I found in the frozen foods section of our local H.E.B. grocery store. You could make your own pizza dough, but that’s a pain in the ass…trust me. Even if you get a packet of pizza dough mix it’s still a ridiculous pain in the ass bone. Just get a ready-made dough ball from the store, or even a local pizzeria, who often sell dough balls for a buck or two. If you’re in the Austin area, I recommend getting a dough ball from Double Dave’s Pizzaworks.
2) Sauce. I used an off the self jar of spaghetti sauce from the store. You could make your own sauce, but again…pain in the ass.
3) Toppings. Whatever you want…meat, vegetables, jawbreakers, etc. But make sure you prep them. Get all your toppings ready to go, because the grilling happens quick.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
1) Fire up your grill and let it heat up to about 450 degrees Fahrenheit (or about 232 Celsius for you Europeans.)
2) Roll, toss, or stretch out your dough to a good size for pizza. I stretched mine out. I like to toss, and am good at it, but my ceilings are too low.
3) Oil the grill rack with a bit of olive oil and place your pizza dough directly on the rack. Then ignore it for a few minutes.
4) Once the bottom of your pizza dough has acquired some tasty looking grill marks, and the entire pizza dough is stiff enough to flip with tongs…flip it over with some tongs.
5) Now, act quickly. Dump all of your toppings onto your pizza dough. Shut the grill. Within a few minutes you should find a perfectly cooked…I mean, GRILLED, pizza!
